HMW Law - Commercial Campaign

Writer/Director/Cinematographer

I wrote, directed, and photographed a six-commercial campaign for personal injury firm HMW Law. Breaking from the formula of traditional legal advertising, I developed a cinematic, character-driven narrative designed to capture attention, engage viewers, and make the campaign memorable.

“As a director, Jason Tomaric brings three important things to the table… creativity, organization, and value.

His shoot days run like clockwork, and when Jason works within a budget, that doesn’t mean cutting back on quality…he finds a way to bring the most to a project for the money.”

FilmSkills Academic

The complete online filmmaking program

I founded FilmSkills to create one of the most comprehensive online filmmaking curricula available—a modular learning platform with 340 lessons covering the entire filmmaking process, from screenwriting, producing, and pre-production through directing, cinematography, lighting, audio, post-production, marketing, and distribution.

Building the curriculum involved seeking out, interviewing, and shadowing more than 70 Academy Award and Emmy-winning filmmakers, capturing not just theory, but the techniques, workflows, and lessons they developed over decades of professional production experience.

FilmSkills also grew through partnerships I developed with leading industry companies, including ARRI, Kino Flo, Matthews Studio Equipment, Final Draft, and Audio-Technica. Working with both these companies and industry experts, we produced more than 250 educational videos—many filmed on professional sets and built around real-world demonstrations of the filmmaking process.

Those videos became the foundation of a complete modular curriculum that I developed with illustrated tutorials, downloadable professional resources, projects, exercises, assessments, and other learning tools. Each lesson is self-contained, allowing educators and organizations to select and combine individual lessons to build courses and training programs around their specific needs.

What began as an effort to capture and preserve the knowledge of experienced filmmakers has grown into an educational platform used by thousands of learners and adopted by more than 125 film schools and universities, including UCLA, Yale, Emerson College, Santa Monica College, and Chapman University. FilmSkills has also been adopted by film commissions, production companies, and studios for filmmaking education and professional workforce training.

AccuSkills

An Online Teaching Tool

I created AccuSkills to rethink how schools and companies build, manage, and deliver online education. Developed in collaboration with more than 50 universities, AccuSkills is a cloud-based learning platform that combines modular curriculum development with tools for online courses, classroom instruction, testing, student tracking, certification, and analytics.

Rather than forcing educators into a rigid traditional LMS, AccuSkills was designed around reusable learning modules that can be updated once and deployed across multiple classes, courses, instructors, and organizations. The platform also supports fully branded learning environments, allowing schools and companies to deliver and manage training under their own identity.

AccuSkills grew directly from my experience as both an educator and educational content producer—building technology around the way instructors actually teach and students actually learn. AccuSkills delivers our FilmSkills curriculum to over 100 colleges, universities, high schools, and organizations.

Published Author

8 internationally-distributed books

My professional experience as a filmmaker and educator led to two comprehensive filmmaking books published by Focal Press, one of the industry’s leading publishers of professional film and media texts. The Power Filmmaking Kit and Filmmaking: Direct Your Movie from Script to Screen Using Proven Hollywood Techniques translate real-world production experience into practical, step-by-step instruction covering the filmmaking process from development through distribution.

That work expanded into the six-volume FilmSkills textbook series, covering cinematography, directing, producing, screenwriting, editing, and production safety. Designed as part of the FilmSkills curriculum, the books bring professional production practices into the classroom and give students practical instruction grounded in how films are actually made.

American Cinematographer wrote: “There are no wasted words in Tomaric’s tome, which concisely summarizes each facet of the director’s craft. It’s difficult to think of a step in the process that Tomaric fails to address.”
